When we think of iconic fashion we often consider the archetypal figures of music and film as true influencers but the world of sports is an equally rich source of classic fashion. Over the year’s many legends have sported an array of iconic garments and accessories so we’ve been inspired to take a look back and uncover those infamous pieces.
BJORN BORG
Celebrities and idols have always sported memorable hairdos throughout the years. Everything from mullets to out of control perms- but there is also a decent amount of headwear made famous by certain sporting figures. Tennis superstar Bjorn Borg was one such star who made his Fila headband into an effortless 70’ fashion accessory. Not only did it help keep the Swede’s long locks in place but it was also a simple fashion add-on which has gone down in history as a well recognisable look.
HULK HOGAN
It’s difficult to picture legendary former wrestler Hulk Hogan without his famous bandana and shreddable yellow tank top. The outfit made its inaugural appearance in the ring in 1981 during Wrestlemania III and over the years Hogan’s tank top was consistently ripped from his bulky chest before every big bout.
GEORGE BEST
Northern Irish footballer George Best was a charismatic figure in the footballing world both on and off the pitch. The striker led an over-the-top lifestyle which led to many issues ultimately but in his prime he was considered an icon and role model. Best’s success as a player with Manchester United helped inspire a whole new footballing culture as well as terrace fashion in the 1960’s whenever he sported that famous red playing jersey.
MUHAMMAD ALI
An iconic boxer and all-round sporting legend, no list of this ilk would ever be completed without the presence of Muhammed Ali. During his lustrous boxing career Ali often sported his black and white Everlast boxing trunks but the lucky shorts took on even more prominence thanks to a famous and now celebrated photo of Ali standing above his opponent Sonny Liston as he laid sprawled on the canvas back in 1965.
ERIC CANTONA
Another Manchester United legend appears on our list and this time it’s the Maverick French man Eric Contona. In 1992 the scintillating forward made his debut for Alex Ferguson’s side and, with true nonchalance, decided to flip his shirt collar up. This arbitrary action was something that Cantona continued to do throughout his playing career and 90’s football fans will always remember emulating Eric on the school playing fields.
